Bruce Lee believed in education. He pursued a Bachelors degree in Philosophy at the University of Washington while at the same time teaching Gung Fu and lecturing on Eastern Philosophy at the local High School. He worked hard to learn to speak English grammatically correctly with great attention to colloquial phrasing and jokes, so that his grasp of the language would be truly fluent. He often helped other native speakers with their English papers even though English was not truly his first language. While Bruce Lee did not ultimately earn his degree, he did not stop educating himself. He was an avid reader, reading not only books on martial arts and philosophy but also books on self-improvement, acting, photography, etc. He always kept a dictionary handy so that he could be sure to look up any words he didn’t know and add them to his repertoire of expanding knowledge. Bruce Lee was a writer and a teacher as well. He wrote many volumes of notes as well as penning articles and books while teaching students martial arts both privately and in a class setting at the schools he founded. Bruce Lee went on to revolutionize the martial arts world by creating specialized training equipment and, of course, founding his own art. He energized an entire world and inspired all he touched, whether personally or through his films and writings, to identify fiercely with both the World and the Self in the here and now with Faith and Perseverance.
To that end, the Bruce Lee Foundation has developed a Scholarship Program to help individuals pursue their dream of education. It is our dream, that in the years to come, the Foundation will be helping to educate and inspire people with a variety of scholarships, a wide array of recipients, and larger awards.
The Bruce Lee Foundation Scholarship Program was founded in 2002 when the organization was first established. The first Award was given in 2003, and the program has been growing ever since.
